How to separate an egg

Easy - use this:

What a nifty little gadget for separating eggs - the yolk settles neatly into the round dip in the middle, and the white slithers through the two slits in the sides.

Believe it or not, I've been a separator-virgin all these years, avoiding any recipes that call for segregation of the contents of an egg ("Whites only, no yellows please"). It just seemed so heartless to me, separating the two in a ham-handed operation that resulted in yolkshed as often as not... it made me feel like it was the British Raj all over again. Forced partition, in other words.

Until I bought this separator. Now it's just SO easy. No violence required, no unnecessary yolkshed. Just a peaceful departure of the whites, leaving behind the yellow. Anything for a simple life!

What an interesting comparison! Just finished Midnight's Children which of course explores the partition ...

Oddly enough, I've just re-read (for the nth time) Freedom at Midnight. I guess that kinda took over this post!

Thats a lovely item to be added definetely to my kitchen. By the way where did you get that shammi? Would I be able to get one in India?

I was going to ask the same thing -- where did you get that nifty gadget? I use my hands to separate eggs... egg in loose palm allows whites to slip through fingers. However, it makes a mess as you might imagine :)

Best wishes from New England.

Shammi,
What a lovely write-up! Just three short paragraphs, but there is so much to read. "Separator-virgin. Yolkshed. Forced partition." Loved it.

Sowjanya - dunno if you get it in India, but I guess it's possible. It's not exactly a complicated gadget, so it might be available.

Linda - I'm sure you'll get this at any kitchen specialist store, if not in your local supermarket.

Vaishali - Thank you for the compliment. You're too kind :)

Hi. I was surfing around blogs this morning and found your biscuit post. Those look very good.

The yolk/white separater looks like a handy tool. I always separate them by using the shells. It would be much easier with one of those.

I too use the same gadget to separate eggs. Brought back one from my previous trip back home. Couldn´t find one here in Switzerland.

My observation is not about the gadget as much as it is about the finger holding it. Very artistic and delicate. I'm very aware of my own stubby, wrinkled digits (check out my profile photo) that I notice these things. Sorry if I sound a little seedy there.
